NOUNS: SINGULAR AND PLURAL

WE LEARN THE BASIC DIFFERENT TYPES  OF THE NOUNS. NOUNS TELL ABOUT THE NUMBER OF THINGS THEY NAME.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUN?

SINGLE MEANS JUST ONE THING, PERSON, PLACE. A NOUN NAMES ANY ONE THING, PERSON OR PLACE CALLED SINGULAR NOUN.
FOR EXAMPLE - A BALLON, A BOY, AN ELEPHANT, GLASS

PLURAL MEANS MORE THAN ONE. A NOUN NAMES MORE THAN ONE THINGS, PERSONS, AND PLACES CALLED PLURAL NOUN.
FOR EXAMPLE - RIVERS, BODIES, BENCHES, TOYS, GIRLS.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT METHODS OF CHANGING SINGULAR NOUN TO PLURAL NOUN?

  •  WE CAN ADD '-S' TO MOST NOUNS TO FORM PLURALS.

 EXAMPLES:

FLOWER                               FLOWERS
QUILL                                   QUILLS
  •  WE CAN ADD '-ES' TO SOME NOUNS THAT END IN 'O', 'S', 'SS', 'CH', AND 'X' TO FORM THEIR PLURALS.
EXAMPLES:
SINGULAR FORM                PLURAL FORM

BUT PIANO, PHOTO, AND RADIO BECOME PIANOS, PHOTOS, AND RADIOS RESPECTIVELY.

  • NOUNS THAT END IN '-Y'. IN THEIR ALSO TWO TYPES OF FORM
1 ) IF THE LETTER BEFORE 'Y' IS A CONSONANT, CHANGE 'Y' TO '-I' AND ADD '-ES'.
EXAMPLES:
BABY                                BABIES
CITY                                  CITIES

2 ) IF THE LETTER BEFORE 'Y' IS A VOWEL, JUST ADD '-S'.
EXAMPLES:
KEY                                    KEYS
BOY                                    BOYS

  • WE CAN FORM PLURALS OF NOUNS ENDING IN '-F' OR '-FE '  BY CHANGING THE '-F' OR '-FE' TO '-VES'.
EXAMPLES:
WOLF                                WOLVES
LIFE                                  LIVES
  • WE CAN FORM PLURALS OF SOME NOUNS BY CHANGING ONE OR MORE VOWELS IN THEM.
EXAMPLES:

TOOTH                          TEETH
FOOT                              FEET

  • THE PLURAL OF SOME NOUNS ARE THE SAME THAT OF THE SINGULAR.
EXAMPLES:
SHEEP                         SHEEP
DEER                            DEER
HAIR                            HAIR

IMPORTANT NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING WORDS CHANGE IN THE PLURAL AS GIVEN.

SINGULAR                             PLURAL
IS/AM                                     ARE
WAS                                        WERE
HAS                                         HAVE
THIS                                        THESE
THAT                                      THOSE

NOW WE HAVE TO REMEMBER JUST THESE THINGS TO FORM SINGULAR TO PLURAL AS PER THE LETTERS.
  1. JUST ADD '-S'
  2. ADD '-ES' TO ''O' , 'S', 'SS', 'CH', AND 'X'.
  3. CHANGE 'Y' TO '-I' OR '-ES' OR 'S'.
