BASIC ENGLISH GRAMMER VERBS

 VERBS

WHAT IS VERBS?

VERBS ARE SAYING AND DOING WORDS. THEY TELL SOMETHING ABOUT THE ACTION TAKING PLACE IN THE SENTENCE. VERBS CHANGE FORM ACCORDING TO THE TIME OF THE ACTION.
A VERB CONVEYS AN ACTION, AN OCCURENCE, OR A STATE OF BEING. IN THE BASIC FORM , WITH OR WITHOUT THE PARTICLE TO, IS THE INFINITIVE. VARBS ARE ALSO INFLECTED TO ENCODE TENSE.

FORMS OF VERBS

THERE ARE BASICALLY FOUR FORMS OF VERBS:

1. ROOT FORM :

THIS FORM OF THE VERB IS USED WHEN AN ACTION SHOWS HABITS, GENERAL TRUTHS OR FACTS. IT IS THE BASE FORM OF WORD. THIS IS JUST LIKE A ROOT OF TREES ,  ROOTS ARE VERY NECESSARY TO GROW PLANT. AS BASE OF WORD IS NECESSARY TO CONVERT WORDS FROM ONE FORM TO ANOTHER FORM.

EXAMPLE:-
1) SHE SLEEPS.(DOES)
2) HE JUMPS.(DOES)
3) IT EATS. (DOES)

2. PAST FORM:

THIS FORM OF THE VERB IS USED WHEN AN ACTION HAPPENED IN THE PAST.
EXAMPLE:-
1) HE SLEPT. (DID)
2) SHE JUMPED.(DID)
3) IT ATE.(DID)

3. PAST PARTICIPLE FORM:

THIS FORM OF THE VERB IS USED WHEN AN ACTION HAS JUST COMPLETED.
EXAMPLE:-
1) HE HAS SLEPT. (DONE)
2) SHE HAS JUMPED.(DONE)
3) IT HAS EATEN.(DONE)

4.-ING FORM:

THIS FORM OF THE VERB IS USED WHEN AN ACTION IS GOING ON AT THE TIME OF SPEAKING.
EXAMPLE:-
1) HE IS SLEEPING. (DOING)
2) SHE IS JUMPING. (DOING)
3) IT IS EATING. (DOING)

VERBS CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO TWO TYPES:
1) WEAK / REGULAR VERBS:
IN WEAK VERBS ‘-D’, ‘-ED’, OR ‘-T’ MAY BE ADDED TO CHANGE THE FORM.
E.G. SUBSTRACT                  SUBTRACTED                SUBSTRACTED

2) STORNG/ IRREGULAR VERBS:
THESE VERBS DO NOT END WITH ‘-ED’ IN THEIR PAST AS WELL AS PARTICIPLE FORM.
E.G. DO                                 DID                                        DONE
